【摘要】An American Tragedy is one of the most representative novels of Theodore Dreiser.The novel tells a story of Clyde Griffiths’ corruption from an innocent boy into a murderer by pursuing pleasure and high status.This paper analyses Clyde’s tragedy causes from the historic social environment and the weakness in his personality.The paper can be divided into four chapters.The first chapter is introduction;including the background and meaning of study.The second chapter is the plot of the novel and introduces the main characters.The chapter three analyses the main causes which results in protagonist’s tragedy,including social factors,family factors as well as character factors.In the last chapter the writer makes a conclusion that Clyde’s tragedy is both the tragedy of himself and the tragedy of bourgeoisie.He is also a victim under capitalist system.
